Conquering a Greek feast

December 21, 2012

The vast majority of my local friends are self-employed, own a small business or are freelance contractors - not surprising as my area of Vancouver Island has been named the #1 or #2 best place in Canada to start a small business repeatedly. The one problem with choosing to 'do our thing' is that when Christmas comes around, everyone else heads off to be wined and dined at holiday parties and us independent types are left out in the cold. So this year, we're getting together for our own Self-Employed Christmas Party and I offered to cater our dinner.

A friend suggested a Greek theme for the food, as she and her husband had a palate-changing trip to Greece last year and have been in love with it ever since. I cook simple Greek dishes at home, and figured this would be an opportunity to learn more about this style of cooking.

So I've been pouring over food blogs and recipe books for the past week, and am now in the midst of making a five-course Greek Feast completely from scratch. Here's my planned menu:

Homemade Pita and Tzatziki

Marinated Feta and Olives

Zucchini & Potato Moussaka (made this yesterday and LOVE the results

Lemon Oregano Roast Chicken

Lemon Potatoes

Greek Salad

Baklava

Fruit Pavlova (ok, this last one isn't really Greek, just capitalizing on my new-found meringue knowledge)

Looking forward to seeing how all this comes together, as it's the most new recipes I've ever tried at once for a meal.

Must go punch down some pita dough...

That looks SO good. You can come cook for me anytime!
