Deez Bar & Grill for hot wings and good times

It's October Restaurant Roundup time, and this month Food Bloggers of Canada across the country are highlighting great spots to find that irresistible bar food - wings!

When I started asking around for recommendations of a good place for wings in Central Vancouver Island, one name popped up again and again - Deez Bar and Grill in Qualicum Beach.

Located on the Island Highway just north of the beautiful arc of Qualicum Beach edging the ocean water of the Georgian Straight, Deez is a cute, unassuming pub-style restaurant nestled in the trees, priding themselves on great service and comfort food for the whole family.

While Deez has a variety of specials throughout the week (I've heard great things about their Fish & Chips night), Wednesday is their most popular night of the week with their Wing Wednesdays special. You may be able to slip into an empty table if you arrive early, but reservations are recommended and it does get completely booked up almost every week. Who knew Vancouver Islanders loved their wings this much?

All wings are .35 cents a piece, and there's lots of choices including 5 levels of hot wings, salt & pepper, Teriyaki, honey garlic, sweet heat and more. As an added touch that enhances wing night, the house lager beer is also on special for $4 a mug. Our server was helpful and welcoming, and our order arrived in no time at all.

I found the wings perfectly crunchy, golden brown and flavourful. The breading is my favourite part, as I like a good crunch, but want to still be able to enjoy the flavour of the chicken without having to fight through a thick layer of breading. We tried their most popular wing - The Level 2 Hot Wing, which is the quintessential mildly spicy classic with just the right amount of hot sauce, bringing back memories of wing & beer nights past and satisfying my chicken-y cravings in an instant.

We also tried the Greek Wings, which are tossed in a mild vinaigrette. These were a little bland for me, I felt like they needed a sprinkling of oregano and squeeze of lemon to really bring the 'Greekness' out. But once again, perfectly cooked, juicy with that great golden, crunchy exterior.

We didn't have a change to try the Teriyaki, but I did notice tasty-looking glossy brown piles of them heading to many tables, and they seem to be a big hit with both the children and seniors around us. I loved seeing how many families there were, happily munching away together, and Deez also appears to be the hip Seniors spot to get together for a pint, a platter of wings and a visit. Qualicum Beach has the highest retirement population in Canada, and the seniors here know how to live it up.

I'm looking forward to coming back to Deez again for wings and a beer on Wednesday night. It's a great west coast restaurant with a friendly and efficient staff, devoted clientele and comfort food that hits the spot.
