Foodie Gift Ideas 2013

December 12, 2013

Less than two weeks until Christmas, are you finished your shopping yet? I'm not even close, but I'll get there...

I wanted to share some of my foodie gift ideas from products I've learned more about or tried myself in 2013, all of which are easy to order online (what's that, less time in over-crowded stores? Oh, yes.).

1. St. Jean's Cannery & Smokehouse West Coast Seafood & Chanterelles -

For the foodie who craves Pacific flavours

A Vancouver Island institution, St. Jean's Cannery & Smokehouse has been sharing west coast delicacies with the world for over 50 years. They have a huge variety of canned seafood, marinades, spice mixes and smokehouse specialties. St. Jean's products and gift baskets ship world-wide, I especially love the new Chowder Pack (pictured above) with all the seafood and flavourings to create a kick-ass west coast chowder at home.

I was also impressed to discover that St. Jean's sells canned Vancouver Island wild Chanterelle mushrooms! Those same mushrooms that I'm tramping through the forest to find each fall can be yours to gift or enjoy (or both!) with the click of a mouse button. St. Jeans Cannery & Smokehouse

 2. Pies Cookbook -

For the baker you want to inspire to make even more pies in 2014

I could go on and on about how much I appreciate this new Canadian cookbook. It's comprehensive without being overwhelming, and both encouraging and inspiring for a home baker of any skill level. Pies makes a great holiday gift for anyone who loves baking pies, eating pies and encouraging others to do the same. Pies by Josée Fiset & Dominique Boué retails for $22.95 and is available at North America bookstores and online book retailers. It's currently on sale for $16.57 on Chapters Indigo.ca.

3. BioSnack Sprouter -

For people who like edible things growing their kitchen

The BioSnacky Sprouter from natural products company A.Vogel is an inexpensive, self-contained seed germinator that allows your lucky gift recipient to grow up to three levels (and varieties) of sprouts in a simple to use container system that retails for $28.

I've used mine many times since reviewing the system last spring and love having fresh sprouts growing in my kitchen to toss in salads and stir-frys, and to stuff into fresh cheesy bagels. bioSnacky Original Seed Sprouter website

3. Snackbox Snack Delivery Subscription -

For people who love trying new munchies delivered by mail

Canadian snack lovers rejoice, there's finally a great snacks-by-mail service for us Canucks. Snackbox monthly subscriptions available nation-wide, sending snack boxes crammed with 10-12 unique and healthy snack choices right to the door of your lucky gift recipient. There are 1, 3 and 6 month gift subscription options, but there's only 200 Snackbox gifts available, so order before they're gone. www.getsnackbox.com

4. The Permaculture Orchard: Beyond Organics Documentary -

For the forward-thinking food gardener

I am among the many who strive to eat locally and grow as much food as I can in newer, smarter, more intuitive ways. There's a beautiful Canadian Kickstarter campaign ending this month to fund a full-length documentary on Permaculture fruit orchards. For $25, you can give someone the gift of a digital copy of the documentary or $45 for a physical DVD, shipped when it is released this coming summer. Permaculture Orchard Kickstarter campaign.

5. Sansaire Sous Vide Machine -

For The Experimental Foodie who loves a kitchen adventure

I had the pleasure of hearing Sansaire inventor Scott Heimendinger speak at the International Food Bloggers Conference this fall, and he got me really excited about trying sous vide cooking at home. The Sansaire Sous Vide Machine retails for a very reasonable $199 US, can be pre-ordered now and will begin shipping units at the end of January world-wide. This is a great gift for someone who craves new adventures in the kitchen. www.sansaire.com

Happy foodie gift giving, everyone!
