Oyster Mushroom update, Day 6

The mushrooms have arrived!

I'm on Day Six of my Growing Mushrooms at Home experiment with the Back to the Roots Oyster Mushroom kit. It is really amazing to see how rapidly the rate of growth is increasing by the day now. I can even see a difference in size from morning to evening, and I'm starting to think about what kinds of recipes might work well with my future fungus bounty.

These pictures show the progression from Day 1 to Days 4, 5 & 6. The spores have sprouted everywhere and are now starting to actually look like mushrooms. The heads are the size of M&Ms now, it will be interesting to see how much they increase in size by the day until they are harvest ready on Days 10-15.


It's also cool to see the largest of the mushrooms beginning to exhibit the classic oyster mushroom shape. These rounded heads will eventually elongate to a smooth, wide edge while the stems will continue to grow upwards on an angle. A neat bit of info about the Back to the Root Mushroom growing kit - much of the soil medium that the mushrooms grow in is made from recycled coffee grounds.

I'll be back with another update in a few days and will be faithfully misting these delicious-looking babies twice a day until they're ready to eat.
