Butter Celebrates with Christmas Panettone, a Canadian Blog Hop and Giveaway

I've been excited about this day for a while now, because #ButterBakedBloggers are back with something new! There's a fresh cookbook bringing together everything sweet and butter-baked about holidays and celebrations throughout the year. Butter Celebrates! A Year of Sweet Recipes to Share with Family and Friends is the second Butter cookbook by Rosie Daykin, best-selling author and owner of Vancouver's Butter Baked Goods Bakery.

I am reviewing this tasty Canadian cookbook along with a great group of food bloggers across the country, as we all test out different recipes from Butter Celebrates and share our pictures and thoughts. After reviewing Daykin's first cookbook Butter Baked Goods last year and getting to know many Butter recipes that I now make regularly, I was thrilled to hear that there was a brand new Butter cookbook being released just in time for the holidays this year.

In fact, it's released just in time for all the holidays. The theme of Butter Celebrates focusing around making the most of all kinds of celebrations, be they the big ones like Christmas and New Years, or the little ones like welcoming a new neighbour or even throwing a doggie birthday party (dog-friend treat recipes!).

And if that's not enough, there's a helpful selection of recipes for staple dessert items like pastry crusts, frosting and butter creams, along with lists of ingredients to stock your pantry and all the fun gadgets and things you need in your kitchen to bake like a champion.

Butter Celebrates is a welcoming and approachable book for a wide variety of baking levels, accompanied by dessert photography so pretty you'll want to show it off on a coffee table and recipes so good you won't be able to keep it out of the kitchen. Go buy this cookbook for yourself or someone you love as a gift immediately, and enjoy celebratory goodies all year long.

Making Christmas Panettone for the first time with Butter Celebrates

When I think of panettone, I think of Christmas mornings with my husband and son, as every year I buy a boxed panettone that goes under the tree, we pop it open and snack on slices spread with butter while we open presents.

Panettone is a classic Italian sweet bread, originally from Milan and sold all over the world, especially during the festive season and New Years. Panettone literally means "Big Bread" in Italian, known for its tall 'cupola' shape - a round cylinder of puffy bread baking up to 15 cm high with a golden-brown dome, that cuts into huge, holiday-worthy slices and makes holiday-worthy french toast and bread pudding.

Growing up in an area of Ontario with a large Italian community, for me panettone was always part of the excitement of the holidays, seeing the local store shelves filling up with gold-embossed boxes and gift-wrapped packages tied with ribbons and filled with that giant-sized pull-apart egg-y bread studded with dried fruit and citrus peel - festive on the outside and the inside.

But to make that signature mile-high sweet bread at home? Like... in my own crappy old oven, from scratch?! I had never even thought to try, or dared to hope I could. But the easy-to-follow, step-by-step recipe in Butter Celebrates convinced me it could be done, it should be done and this year it will be my homemade panettone that we're munching on while we open presents on Christmas morning.

It turns out I can, indeed, make panettone from scratch - thanks to Butter Celebrates! My dough rose tall and true to the very tops of the paper molds, and I was stoked to reach a height of 15 cm on my first try. The flavour of the bread is great, not too sweet with a tender, chewy crumb, filled with dried cranberries, sour cherries and candied citrus.

So festive and fun, I can't wait to make more. The cookbook has a great tip about taking a loaf of homemade Christmas Panettone (wrapped all fancy, of course) along with a bottle of maple syrup as a gift for the hosts of holiday parties.

Anonbymous - You are right, it is not a fine dining restaurant. My argument was that some of the dishes and prices were at that level though (lots of truffle stuff etc... all items that are more fine dining than anything). This post is now 3 years old anyway, so a few things might have changed, but I haven't visited it since :)

This is soooooooo lovely. I have 4 of your prints and think they are fab. So glad to find your blog and your boys work is fantastic! Sadly my 3 year old doesn't seem to like 'art' much, but I'm not giving up yet! Wonderful stuff. Helen
