Trying a Suja Cold-Pressed Juice Cleanse

I try to make most of what I cook at home from scratch, we eat lots of fresh things grown in my kitchen garden and found at local markets, and make an effort to eat as seasonally as we can. Does this mean my husband and I eat right all the time? Certainly not, I'm as guilty as the next person of indulging myself with naughty junk food, fatty fast food and other random processed garbage.

It was an amusing irony that I wasn't home when the beautiful package of Suja Juices arrived for me to try. Where was I? In line at the MacDonald's drive-through! Was it time for a detoxing cleanse? Yes... yes, indeed.

Suja Juice is a California-based company that has created a high-quality line of certified organic, non-GMO cold-pressed juices packed with fruit, vegetables and the nutrition that we all need but often miss in our diets. Their cleanse system consists of six of their juices per day, designed to give your gastrointestinal system a rest as you eliminate toxins and purify your body. All juices are also dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free and vegan.

My husband and I decided to try a Suja One Day Cleanse together and compare notes on what we thought of both the juices, and how we felt throughout the process. Here is how it went:

 One Day Suja Juice Cleanse

Morning: The cleanse starts with a simple hot cup of water with lemon to alkalize our bodies. We actually enjoy this, and I don't even miss my morning coffee (much). My husband is surprised by how much he likes starting the day this way, vows to do it more often.

First Juice of the Day: Glow - 2 apples, 6 celery stalks, 1/2 a cucumber, a handful of spinach, 3 collard leaves, 3 kale leaves and a sprig for mint. The cucumber flavour hits me at first sip and I'm not in love, but as I get into the bottle, the fresh, bright flavour starts to grow on me and I like the hint of mint. I also know that this is way more healthful nutrition than is usually going into my system at this hour (cough*dailycoffeetoastegg*cough). So far so good.

Mid-Morning Juice: Fuel - 9 carrots, 1 orange, 1 apple, a slice of pineapple, 1/2 a lemon and an inch of fresh turmeric. I knew I liked this one with the first sip, it's my kind of flavour combination. Sweet and pineapple-y, with a citrus zing. Enjoyed the whole bottle happily. Husband liked it a little less, he's not really a citrus guy, but still enjoyed.

I was excited about the turmeric, I occasionally buy it fresh from the store and grate it into my Indian curries and rice. It's a root that looks like a darker, smaller ginger on the outside, and is bright orange inside. While I can't really taste it in the Fuel juice (which is expected, turmeric has a mild flavour and a big part of its appeal is in the colour it gives dishes), the health benefits of turmeric are amazing and it's great to have a juice that packs a bunch of these nutrients into my body with no effort from me.

Lunchtime: Purify - 7 carrots, 1 apple, 2 celery stalks, 1/4 of a cucumber, 1/2 a beet and 1/2 a lemon. This juice is bright red and has a beet-esque aftertaste. I don't love it, but once again the more I sip away, the more it grows on me. My husband likes this one quite a bit and it gives him an good energy boost. Neither of us is feeling hungry and the juices are filling us up, although we both now have low-grade headaches, which is expected as built-up toxins are being released. It's a cold day, so we are drinking Lemon Ginger tea between 'Juice Meals'.

Afternoon: Fiji - 2 apples, 6 celery stalks, 1/2 a cucumber, a handful of spinach, 3 collard greens, 3 kale leaves, squeeze of lemon and hint of ginger. I pop this bottle while watching a little reality tv and find that this is my least liked of all the Suja Juices. It's crammed with healthy greens and I want to love it, but I don't like the Sweet/Savoury flavour and the name 'Fiji' doesn't seem to fit with the vegetal taste. I think I'd prefer this one if the apples were replaced by tomatoes for a more vegetable cocktail flavour. We both agree this is a low point in the day, headaches making us crabby, but we push on.

Dinner: Green Supreme - 5 apples, 1 bunch of kale, 1/2 a lemon. We're getting close to the end of the cleanse, and are delighted to find we both really like Green Supreme. It tastes like a fresh, bright apple cider and I could drink this one every day. We're still not physically hungry for extra food (though mentally, I am missing chewing things) and both in surprisingly good spirits again, if a little low in energy and still head-achy.

Dessert: Vanilla Cloud - 1/2 a coconut's meat, 12 almonds, a spoonful of honey, and a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. It's the end of cleanse day, and Vanilla Cloud is the perfect reward as it really does taste like dessert. It's creamy and thicker than the other juices, with an almost Chai flavour to it. We agreed it was a nice way to round out the cleanse day, while adding some protein and healthy fats to our systems with the coconut and almonds.

Overall impressions of the Suja Juice Cleanse: For the most part, we were both really impressed with the Suja Juice Cleanse. While our opinions varied on what we thought of each juice's flavour, all bottles were superior to the majority of similar products on the market and tasted just like fresh home-juiced fruits and vegetables.

While there were moments during the cleanse day that didn't feel great physically, the positive after-effects were very tangible. We both had low-grade headaches again the day after the cleanse and drank lots of water and ate fairly simply - veggies, fish, quinoa - to continue flushing out the toxins released by the cleanse while getting our stomachs running again with healthful, easy to digest foods.

We both lost weight and eliminated a lot of retained water caused our somewhat salty typical diet. I noticed my legs in particular were much slimmer and sleeker after the cleanse and both of our waistlines went down a few inches. My skin also looks great now, clear and glowing. My husband liked the experience so much that he wants to try a multi-day juice cleanse in the future.

By the numbers, two people doing a Suja Juice One Day Cleanse together drink the nutritional equivalent of:

32 carrots, 22 apples, 28 celery stalks, 2 1/2 cucumbers, 4 handfuls of spinach, 12 collard greens, 26 kale leaves, 3 lemons, 2 oranges, 2 slices of pineapple, 1 beet, 2 inches of turmeric, 1 entire coconut and 24 almonds.

That's an impressive amount of healthy food going into your system in one day, and with all the juicing done for you with this huge amount of fresh produce, well worth the price of the Suja Juices. I'm very happy we tried out the Suja Cleanse, it opened both our eyes to how easy juice cleansing can be and that it does have tangible, lasting results to our overall health.
