Vancouver Culinary Scavenger Hunt & Giveaway

Living on Vancouver Island, I'm so close yet so far away from Vancouver's vibrant foodie scene. I get to enjoy the odd lunch or dinner when I come into the city on business, but I really wanted to do some restaurant exploring in Western Canada's largest city.

Then the perfect opportunity popped up on my Twitter feed - A Culinary Scavenger Hunt in downtown Vancouver with eight different restaurants offering tastings off their menus and fun challenges throughout one afternoon, hosted by Vancouver Foodster. And since my brother, photographer Geoff Howe is now living in Vancouver, I invited him to come along with me for this unique foodie adventure.

I ferried across the Georgia Straight from Vancouver Island bright and early and made my way into downtown Vancouver, meeting my brother at XOXOLAT Chocolate Shop where the Culinary Scavenger Hunt began. We were excited to discover that there were over 150 other eager BC foodies joining us for the afternoon, which boded well for an entertaining day.

All participants were given a map of the eight restaurants we'd been visiting on our own time between 2 and 6 pm, traveling on foot, with a clue to our first destination. While I'd love to write about every destination, that would be a damn long blog post, so here are a few highlights from the experience. If you'd like to try out a Foodster Vancouver Tasting Event, be sure to enter the Devour & Conquer Tasting Plates Ticket Giveaway below.

XOXOLAT Chocolate Shop

Pronouced "Sho-Sho-Lat", this incredible boutique chocolate shop in the heart of Vancouver's downtown has Canada's largest selection of single origin chocolate bars from around the world, as well as their own signature XOXOLAT bars and mesmerizing chocolate creations.

The staff are knowledgeable, enthusiast and show real pride in their work. I sampled the strange but addictive Tortilla Chips & Lime and Sour Cherry & Chilies XOXOLAT signature chocolate bars, fell in love and bought one of each to take home and enjoy later.

Chasers Fresh Juice & Deli

One of our Culinary Scavenger Hunt challenges was to 'Find something juicy at Chaser's Fresh Juice & Deli'. As you can see, my bro and I got to squeeze and sample our own fresh orange juice and nibble on some raw food energy balls. A sweet little shop with a tasty menu of fresh juices, smoothies and healthy choices made from scratch by a cheerful staff.

The Parlour Yaletown

One of the most entertaining spots of the entire Culinary Scavenger Hunt was definitely The Parlour Yaletown. The staff went all out to show us Foodster scavengers a good time with food, fun and friendly service. There was a bar filled with an ever-changing variety of their gorgeous hand-crafted pizzas with hilarious names like 'Wake n' Bake' and '#SWAG' for sampling, along with fresh salads and glasses of BC Craft Beer.

We were also giving social media photo challenges to complete during our visit which kept us busy and entertained throughout our visit, and we had a good laugh watching other participant's photos popping up with the challenge hashtag #VFScavHunt on Twitter and Instagram.

Bella Gelataria

The ever popular Bella Gelataria isn't hard to spot from the street, as an ever-present line of gelato enthusiasts wait for their turn for this creamy, icy delciousness. We tried their International Double Award-winning Toasted Pecan and Canadian Maple Syrup, as well as their classic vanilla and chocolate flavours.

Shoutouts to other stops on the Culinary Scavenger Hunt

 - Cooked up some chorizo with Chef Robyn Schiber at Milestones Grill & Bar in Yaletown for their new Breakfast Toastadas with Chipotle Hollandaise. Was also impressed that he happily whipped up a vegetarian version for my brother in a flash.

 - Sampled sweet and savoury pannekoeken right at the water's edge at the Vancouver Convention Centre's De Dutch Pancake House with De Best Damn View in Town.

 - Sipped signature teas paired with airy sweet macaron at Soirette Macarons & Tea.

 - Tasted an incredible Tuna Tataki at 1789 Restaurant in Gastown, got to peek into their beautiful private dining rooms and chatted with passionate Chef Daryle Ryo Nagata about his seasonal menu and love of Canadian food culture.

The Foodster Culinary Scavenger Hunt was everything I hoped it would be and more - a great opportunity to explore a wide variety of places to eat in downtown Vancouver in a highly entertaining way. If this sort of experience is right up your alley, get on over to the Vancouver Foodster website and check out the upcoming Burgerpalooza and Main Street Tasting Plates events coming up in May.
